Briefly Cricket: Haddin’s Test career in doubt

Haddin’s Test career in doubt

Sydney: Australian wicket-keeper Brad Haddin may have played his last Test after withdrawing Friday from the series against the West Indies for undisclosed family reasons. Haddin shocked the team before the one-day matches in the Caribbean by returning home but he was expected to be available for the three-Test series that begins next month. The 34-year-old had lost his one-day place to Matthew Wade, who is 10 years younger, but selector Rod Marsh had indicated Haddin remained first choice for the Tests. However, his position for Australia’s Tests against South Africa in November must now be in doubt with Wade expected to make his Test debut on April 7 in Barbados.

Randiv, Prasanna back in SL team

Colombo: Off-spinner Suraj Randiv forced his way back into the Sri Lankan team for the upcoming two-match Test series against England, scheduled to commence from March 26 in Galle. Wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene, who was out of action against South Africa late last year due to an injury is also back. Randiv, who was dropped from the team following an inconsistent run, has pegged his way back as, in five first-class matches this domestic season, the tweaker picked up 37 wickets for his club.

Squad: M Jayawardene (C), A Mathews, T Dilshan, T Paranavitana, L Thirimanne, K Sangakkara, T Samaraweera, D Chandimal, P Jayawardene (wk), S Lakmal, D Prasad, C Welegedera, S Randiv, R Herath.

Afridi lands, lands a blow

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi attacked and slapped a fan at Karachi airport after he returned home from Dhaka where Pakistan won the Asia Cup final against Bangaldesh on Thursday. Pakistan television channels showed Afridi, wearing a pink T-shirt, first push a youth to the ground and then slap him before his brother intervened and pulled him away in a melee on Friday night.
